More Than a Game

A Lifelong Journey.

Your time on the field, court, or track was just the beginning. After We Play helps former athletes overcome

the challenges faced while transitioning from sports to their next chapters in life.

Over 70% of athletes struggle to define their next chapter after sports.

Nearly 1 in 5 elite athletes misuse alcohol, but high school athletes are more likely to misuse alcohol than non-athletes, increasing long-term health and identity risks.

Among high school students, 40% report persistent sadness or hopelessness, and nearly 20% seriously consider suicide.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among NCAA athletes, with rates doubling in the past two decades.

Retired athletes face anxiety and depression rates more than double those of the general population.

Up to 34% of elite athletes experience anxiety or depression while competing, and 26% still do after retirement.

44% of female college athletes report feeling overwhelmed, and nearly 1 in 3 struggle with overwhelming anxiety.

Female elite athletes are significantly more likely to face anxiety, depression, and eating disorders than their male peers.

At After We Play, we partner with universities, sports organizations, and professional leagues to provide tailored programs that support athlete transitions — from career coaching to mental wellness resources.

Let’s build a future where every athlete has the tools to succeed long after the final whistle.

LOUISVILLE, KY - February 28, 2026 - After We Play, a purpose-driven online community and educational platform dedicated to supporting athletes through the emotional, psychological, and identity challenges of life beyond competitive sport, today announced its official launch scheduled for late spring 2026. Concurrently, the organization will release its flagship program, The Invisible Game — a comprehensive curriculum designed to help athletes navigate the internal pressures, identity shifts, and mental health demands that often accompany performance and transition.

Founded by former collegiate athlete and entrepreneur Scott Roussell, After We Play exists to empower athletes with clarity, confidence, and direction to “excel in life through the challenge of sport.” Scott’s vision emerged from his own experiences with athletic transition and a belief that competitive success must be matched with personal resilience and purpose. The Invisible Game curriculum reflects this vision, offering structured guidance on emotional awareness, identity redefinition, mental conditioning, and long-term wellbeing for athletes at every stage of their journey.

“Too many athletes are left without the tools they need to truly thrive — not just when the practice ends, the game ends, the season ends, or even the career ends,” said Roussell. “After We Play was built to change that reality — to provide support that is practical, accessible, and rooted in both lived experience and sound psychological principles.”

Leading the curriculum development as Chief Clinical Director, Dr. Lori Freeman, PSYD, brings specialized expertise in sport psychology and athlete wellbeing. Dr. Freeman’s professional experience spans collegiate athletic departments and clinical practice, helping athletes address mood and anxiety concerns, identity transitions, performance pressures, and life balance. Her work ensures The Invisible Game integrates evidence-based strategies that honor both mental health and athletic experience.

The launch of The Invisible Game curriculum marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to destigmatize mental health challenges in athletics and provide proactive resources that help athletes build resilience, purpose, and wellbeing well beyond competition. Athletes, coaches, sports organizations, and families are invited to learn more about After We Play and The Invisible Game curriculum at www.afterweplay.com.
